Naranag Temples
Naranag is located at Wangat Valley in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, about 50 km northwest of Srinagar. It popularly serves as a base camp for a number of treks in Kashmir, and also houses the ancient Naranag Temple Complex.
The cluster of temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva and were built by King Lalitaditya Muktapida of the Kayastha Naga Nagarkota Dynasty some time during the 8th Century. As the legend goes, it was at this site that Lord Shiva had saved Goddess Parvati from demons and later married her. The temples are, therefore, an important piece of Hindu history in Kashmir. Unfortunately, the temples are now a shadow of their former selves and all six temples present inside the complex are in ruins.
The temple complex has been declared as a “monument of national importance.” However; its current condition gives the indication that little to no resources are being spent on the upkeep or renovation of the historical structure.
Through this project, we aim to work with authorities and stakeholders to ensure that the temple complex is restored to its former glory
